What is credit history in Poland and how to improve it?

Credit History in Poland

A credit history in Poland is a record of how you have handled financial obligations in the past — such as loans, leasing, credit cards, or even utility and phone bills. It shows whether you paid on time, had delays, entered legal disputes, or acted as a guarantor for someone else.

📌 Where is credit history stored?

The most important credit database in Poland is BIK (Biuro Informacji Kredytowej).
Other commonly used credit registers include:

  • BIG InfoMonitor
  • KRD (National Debt Register – Krajowy Rejestr Długów)
  • ERIF BIG

🔍 What is included in your credit history:

  • Your personal details (name, PESEL, address)
  • Information about loans, leasing, and guarantees
  • Amounts borrowed, start and end dates of loans
  • Payment delays (even small ones)
  • Any court or debt collection proceedings
  • Records of who has checked your credit (even if no loan was granted)

How to improve your credit history in Poland:

  1. Take small loans or purchases on installments and always pay on time
    – For example, a credit card or purchases via Allegro Pay.
  2. Pay all your bills on time
    – Internet, mobile, electricity, etc. Even a 30-day delay may be reported to the debt registers.
  3. Keep your credit card or loan limits under control
    – Try to use no more than 70% of your available credit.
  4. Avoid applying for too many loans at once
    – Each inquiry is recorded and may raise concerns with lenders.
  5. Check your credit report regularly
    – You can get one free report every 6 months from bik.pl.
  6. Repay overdue debts and request an update in the system
    – Once you’ve paid off a debt, you can ask BIK to update your status.

📉 What harms your credit history:

  • Delayed payments over 30 days
  • Court or debt collection involvement
  • Having many loans or credit lines at the same time
  • Frequent applications for payday or short-term loans
  • Acting as a guarantor for someone who fails to pay
